Safavid Waterways Unearthed Near Khwaju Bridge

TEHRAN, July 6 (MNA) –- Following refurbishments on the northern slope of Khwaju Bridge in Isfahan, two waterways belonging to the Safavid era were unearthed.

The head of the refurbishing team explained the first waterway is 3.7m wide and 29.6m long, while the second waterway is 1.8m wide and 27m long.

The restoration of the northern slope of the bridge was begun in January to access the primary Safavid era structure of the bridge, said Esmail Sayyedin.

The two waterways unearthed under the bridge, had been gradually buried underground over the years, Sayyedin said, adding that the ceilings of the both waterways are in poor conditions and need to be restored.

The two sides of the waterways are decorated with beautiful Safavid era tiles, proof that they were at one time the external part of the bridge.

Isfahan Khwaju Bridge was begun in 1659 under the orders of Shah Abbas II and was finished in 1666. It is located in the Khwaju region of Isfahan and was the main place where travelers to Shiraz and Tact-e Fulad in Isfahan used to cross.

The bridge is beautifully decorated with 7 color tiles. Baba Rokneddin, Shiraz, and Hassanabad are the other names the bridge has been called.
